A practice by the Kingston Frontenacs hockey team scheduled for this afternoon at their new home, the K-Rock Centre, has been cancelled.
The city has not been able to secure vital civic approvals that would allow the downtown arena to open for public use. A key test of the building's fire protection and alarm systems that was scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. Thursday was delayed for several hours. The building's system must pass the test before the fire department endorses the structure, paving the way for its opening.
Contractors and city officials are scrambling to complete critical work and secure approvals to allow the building to open Friday for the first Frontenacs hockey game. The game and the
Tragically Hip concert scheduled for Saturday night remain in doubt until the building is declared safe.
The city has said a public announcement will be made this afternoon.
