Free concert raises $7,700 for arena

A free concert that was to raise money for the downtown arena netted $7,676 for
the city.
Organizers said they estimated about 7,000 people came to Market Square for the
concert with Kim Mitchell and April Wine.
Traffic was snarled the night of the concert as Market, King and Brock streets
were all closed to traffic. The audience and pedestrians clogged streets and
sidewalks, either standing or sitting in lawn chairs for the concert.
Proceeds from the concert go towards the $2-million fundraising target for the
sports and entertainment centre. The total so far is about $390,000.
City staff have said the money needs to be raised before the arena opens, which
will now take place in February after the project was delayed one month.
