Cromarty Report on the Kingston Memorial Centre Site: Page 2
  2. DESCRIPTION OF OPTIONS OPTION A

Refer to Appendix 4 for Site Plans, Comparable Costs, Advantages and Disadvantages of this option).

Phase I

This option provides a new ice pad 80’ x 94’ ice pad with a seating capacity of 500 persons located directly south of the existing Memorial Centre. The proposed Curling Rink is located directly to the west of the Memorial Centre with all three facilities connected by a new common entry (galleria). A mezzanine is provided between the new ice pad and the existing Memorial Centre, which would have barrier free access and provide viewing to both rinks.

A second mezzanine is also possible over the new lobby area.

The mezzanine levels could also provide space for licensed lounges, washrooms, meeting rooms and possibly the Wall of Fame and the International Hockey Hall of Fame.

This option allows the existing Fair Buildings, track and ball diamonds to remain.

A stand-alone curling rink, as dotted on the Site Plan, is a further option but would necessitate losing one ball diamond. The curling rink’s original location, west of the new lobby, could be replaced with another related sport’s facility.

Minimum alterations and renovations would be carried out to the Memorial Centre only as required to accommodate the added facilities.

Phase 2

Subsequently the existing Memorial Centre could be demolished and could be replaced with a new arena with a seating capacity of 5,000 to 6,000 as shown dotted on the Site Plan. (Note 1)

Parking could be surface or underground with access for either off Concession Street. When the underground is completed the playing field could be reinstated similar to the parking facility at Queen’s University.
